Generative Art

Generative art is art made using a predetermined system that often includes an element of chance – is usually applied to computer based art. View our collection of generative art here

Art Blocks

Art Blocks is a digital platform where generative artists publish unique artworks using creative code. With historical roots in conceptual art, today generative art typically entails the creation of an algorithm using computer code, with randomness introduced into the artist’s algorithm to produce the unique artworks. Rafaël Rozendaal

Rafaël Rozendaal is one of the best-known artists in the digital art world. Having made websites-as-art-objects since 2001, his work takes shape through a range of transformations – from movement into abstraction, from virtual into physical space, and from website to print – with all of them informing each other. Rozendaal develops his ideas from drawings and sketches, then translated and distributed through programming and coding. In his latest NFT projects, Rozendaal combines visual motifs and themes from recent art history with current forms of communication and developments in blockchain to create vibrant, ever changing dynamic artworks that speak to the broad context of contemporary abstract art. Mathcastles

Mathcastles is a studio composed of two anonymous developers, 0x113d and xaltgeist. They are focused on creating a new runtime-art movement on Ethereum with their genesis series, Terraforms. In September 2022, they wrote both three.js and p5.js into the EVM's storage, allowing creators to use these libraries as composable pieces in dynamic EVM work. Mathcastles exemplifies how two creative minds can collaborate to push boundaries and stimulate productive dialogue in our digital space. View our collection of works by mathscastle here

Physical & Digital

Kanbas is rooted in mid-century modern Latin American art, which ultimately brought us to the on-chain digital art of today (and tomorrow). 20th century LatAm artists were ahead of their time. They were visionaries, innovators, technologists, conceptualists, and cultural critics. They introduced aesthetic ideas inherent to the digital art we collect today, concepts related to algorithms, color theory, coding, collaboration, kinetic dynamism, playfulness, democratized modes of making, the meaning of value and systems, and movement - of art, humanity, and society. Our interest in digital art can be directly traced back to our appreciation for LatAm art. View our favorite pairs from our digital and physical collection here

1/1s

Beeple's body of work includes short films, Creative Commons VJ loops, everydays and VR / AR work. A pioneer of the 'Everyday movement' in digital art, since 2007 Beeple has, without fail, produced daily digital artworks for his 'Everydays' series (2007–ongoing). Beeple catapulted to international prominence in 2021 with the record-breaking US $69 million sale of his NFT artwork, Everydays: The First 5000 Days (2021). Beeple is a leading figure in the NFT art scene and collaborates with celebrities and international brands. Beeple’s work often reflects the theme of "The Sublime," echoing the 19th-century Romanticism that showcased humanity's awe of nature’s vastness. Similar to Friedrich’s landscapes, Beeple’s digital art invokes a sense of wonder in the face of the vast digital realm. In MAY THE FOURTH, Beeple adds a comedic, cyberpunk twist to this theme with a stormtrooper observing a dramatic scene. While technology can make us feel insignificant, it also highlights the irreplaceable nature of human creativity and self-expression. MAY THE FOURTH was originally released on "Star Wars Day" in 2021, as a part of his prolific Everydays series.

Generative Art

Alexis André, also known as MacTuitui, is an artist and researcher whose primary focus is using generative methods to reshape the future of entertainment. His practice is deeply rooted in processing and interactive art, leading him to explore the intersection of art and technology. 24 Heures is a collection of generative NFTs commissioned by a mystery patron and released with Art Blocks. Described by the André as: "A track. Some vehicles. An endless chase for lovers of loops," the series emphasizes the transient nature of time in art. The only way to get a 24H token was to be gifted one from the Mystery Patron that commissioned the piece.

Mathcastles exemplifies how two creative minds can collaborate to push boundaries and stimulate productive dialogue in our digital space. Terraforms is series of ASCII art animations that are fully on-chain, interactive, and together form a map of a virtual environment that is being developed and explored by an active community of collectors. Each NFT in Terraforms is a 32-by-32 grid representing a parcel of terrain in a complex, twenty-level fictional structure known as the “Hypercastle.” The tokens have visible attributes—colors, ASCII characters displayed, and animation speed. Invisible attributes are readable as metadata on OpenSea; they correspond to a parcel’s location within the Hypercastle, indicating which level it is on and its x and y coordinates on that level. Each parcel also has a mode: terrain, daydream, or terraform. Terrain mode indicates a parcel in its original state. Daydream mode means that the parcel has been switched by the owner to a blank slate on which they can draw whatever ASCII creations they want. Terraform mode activates when the drawing made in daydream mode is locked in, or saved back to the blockchain, so that it can be viewed by others. A given parcel can switch between daydream and terraform modes indefinitely, but the initial change from terrain to daydream can only happen once and is irreversible. This means that the quantity of terrain mode NFTs is limited and can only decrease over time. A community has formed around Mathcastles and developed a rich set of tools to use the project’s on-chain data to interpret and visualize the Hypercastle, including Hypercastle Explorers…

Bright Moments

Obvious is a collective of three artists working with the latest models of deep learning to explore the creative potential of artificial intelligence. They are behind the sale of the first AI artwork to go through a major auction house. They use their work to share their vision of artificial intelligence and its implementation in our society. Created for Bright Moments Paris, Whispering Sands is a series of AI-generated artworks that blend machine language, Sanskrit, and binary. Each piece combines a downscaled AI-generated letter inspired by Sanskrit with a pattern created using a code based on the Chladni formula, which visualizes sound frequencies. The artworks represent both the letter and its associated sound, and are designed to be compact enough for on-chain storage.

AI Art

Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst's collaborative work explores power dynamics through AI and virtual ecosystems. Their practice, which includes public performances, music, and a podcast, advocates for vocal sovereignty and protections for artists while exploring new forms of media mimicry. In 2021, Herndon and Dryhurst were invited by OpenAI to work with the DALL-E 1 research model as part of a commission. “Infinite Images” are the product of these experiments, large images meticulously constructed piece by piece to explore the models capacity for coherence. This context hints at why themes of reflection in water and glass, horizon lines and mountain ranges appear so frequently, as the works were constructed by playing an exquisite corpse game with the model. A single initial generation could now be infinitely expanded upon in any direction. To the duo's knowledge, these are the only artworks produced with the original DALL-E model. They represent a transitional phase from the more abstract generations of the models that preceded it, and the high fidelity models we are used to today.
